What it is

Tracks is an iPhone app for people who ride the New York City subway. Tap Start Trip when you get on, ride, and tap End Trip when you get off. Tracks works out which lines and stops you rode and colors them in on your map.

There are 787 stops across 464 stations and 28 services, including the rush-hour-only ones. Filling in all of them takes a while. That’s the point.

Built to work underground

There is no signal on most of the system, so Tracks doesn’t ask for one. The map, the station data and your whole history live on your phone. No tiles to download, no route server to call, nothing to wait for on a platform.

What it does with your location

Tracks reads your location only between Start Trip and End Trip, and only to work out which stations you passed through. It is never used for advertising, and it is never shared with anyone. You can see exactly what was recorded, and delete all of it, from inside the app.
